Four Drills to Practice Your Handgun Technique

As a gun owner, it’s not enough to just own a handgun — you have to know how to use it. At Liberty Firearms Institute in Johnstown, we help to train and educate gun owners on the proper use and care of their firearm through concealed carry courses and other gun safety classes. Whether you carry with you every day or only some of the time, you should know how to use your handgun properly in the circumstance that it can help to save lives. Here are four drills to improve your technique and accuracy with your firearm.

The Pencil Drill

The trigger pull determines the reliability of your shot, so perfecting that is vital to being able to use your firearm well! To help you pull the trigger straight back, place the end of a pencil on the pad of your thumb and the eraser on the point of your trigger finger. With no magazine in the well or round in the chamber, focus on pulling the trigger while pushing the pencil directly into the pad of your thumb.

Single-Shot Drill

This drill can help you to diagnose any trigger pull inconsistencies or barrel pull. Load one round into the chamber and pull the magazine from the mag well. After firing the first shot, reset the trigger and pull it again — this time watching to see where the barrel goes when you pull the trigger to diagnose if there is any shot anticipation.

Shrinking Hole Drill

This drill is great to improve both accuracy and confidence. On a piece of paper (or target), draw three or four circles, starting with a large circle and getting consecutively smaller. From seven meters, fire five rounds into each target, working from large to small. This can help you to get used to hitting smaller targets to help you become more accurate.

Single Shot From Draw

The quick draw is a necessary skill to hone, since most self-defense usage of a firearm needs to happen in about two seconds. To practice your draw and ensure that you can get an accurate shot off in that time, draw your gun from its holster and practice quickly getting off your shot into a bullseye. Once you get comfortable, add a timer to see how long it takes you!

While you can practice these drills on your own, it always helps to have outside instruction. At Liberty Firearms Institute, we offer a huge array of concealed carry courses and shooting classes to help you perfect your technique.
